About Us

What Athlon Stands For

Most Jiu-Jitsu gyms are built around volume—franchise playbooks, competition teams, high member counts. Athlon is built differently. We're an intentionally smaller, focused academy where teens and adults can train seriously, earn real rank, and be part of a culture where training partners come first. Not everyone's fit, not trying to be.

Jamie Miller

Owner/Head Instructor

3rd Degree Black Belt | 25+ Years Training | Former TACP, U.S. Air Force | Combat Base Affiliate

Jamie started Jiu-Jitsu in 1998 as a TACP in the Air Force and has spent over two decades training, teaching and building academies–beginning with Texas Powerhouse MMA before founding Athlon in 2025, the culmination of that journey—a Combat Base affiliate connected to Chris Haueter's lineage, built around Jamie's own standards for how Jiu-Jitsu should be taught.

On the mat, his approach is straightforward: rank is earned, fundamentals come first, and serious students are always welcome.

Robert Brice

Instructor

2nd Degree Black Belt | U.S. Navy Veteran | IBJJF Competitor

Originally from Buffalo, New York, Robert is a Navy veteran who has been training Jiu-Jitsu since 2006. He first started training under Jamie at Texas Powerhouse MMA and earned his black belt in 2018. Robert teaches Wednesday class at Athlon and competes actively on the IBJJF circuit as a medalist.

Off the mat: he’s a proud Garth Brooks fan and, surprisingly, has never watched Breaking Bad.

Ernest De La Cruz

Instructor & MMA Coach

1st Degree Black Belt under Jamie Miller | Former Pro MMA Fighter | Bellator, Legacy, Fury Veteran

Ernest brings over 18 years of martial arts and fitness experience to Athlon. A former professional MMA fighter and amateur featherweight champion, he's competed at the highest regional levels–including Bellator, Legacy, and Fury–with both of his pro wins coming by submission. Ernest has been training under Jamie since their early days together at Texas Powerhouse MMA, Jamie's first academy. He earned his black belt under Jamie and now teaches Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals and leads MMA instruction at Athlon. He also corners fighters for amateur and professional bouts, offering calm, strategic direction on fight night.

Off the mat: family man, outdoorsman and dedicated fisherman.

Jimmy Schroader

Strength Coach

Purple Belt | Exercise Science Degree | National-Level Powerlifter | Former Collegiate Athlete

Originally from Highland, Michigan, Jimmy began wrestling in middle school – a foundation which sparked his career in strength and grappling. With a degree in Exercise Science and years of experience as a coach, trainer, and national-level powerlifter, Jimmy combines scientific programming with real competitive experience. After moving to San Antonio, he returned to Jiu-Jitsu and joined the Athlon team where he currently trains as a purple belt.

Jimmy offers one on one strength and conditioning training for Athlon members looking to build the physical foundation for longevity on the mat. Sessions are separately priced from membership – contact Athlon to inquire.

Katelyn Busby

Creative Content & Gym Manager

Katelyn is a proud mom and wife who owns and operates her own media business, with a special love for capturing the energy and emotion of sports. Introduced to Jiu-Jitsu in 2023 when her husband began training under Jamie Miller, she soon took on the role of Athlon’s gym and social media manager. A lifelong athlete in basketball, softball, and volleyball, she found in Jiu-Jitsu a new challenge that taught patience, perseverance, and growth. Outside the gym, Katelyn enjoys running with her husband and daughter, and is currently training for her first half marathon.
